Glucose Cartoon

Ok, so how many people got this?

Kevin Duffy is the Director of Medicinal Chemistry in the Cancer Research Dept. at GlaxosmithKline. He commissioned this cartoon for some t-shirts, and gave me permission to post our collaboration online.

As you might have guessed, Kevin came up with the idea. And he sent me a t-shirt!

I assume that that's a molecule for some kind of sugar as opposed to a fat, but that's just a plausible guess.

The CO2H group of the molecule sitting down is characteristic of an alcohol.

Yeah, she's wearing a sugar skirt.

COOH would be a carboxylic acid group, no?

Yes. Specifically that is a fully saturated fatty acid. (The unhealthy kind of fat.)

You three make me laugh. I LOVE CHEMISTRY NERDS!

The sugar is a ribose with a phosphate group added (presumably it's asking if the phosphate makes it look fat). The molecule answering is a fatty acid. A saturated fatty acid at that.

The sugar should look sweet, and the a fat molecule should know whether something looks fat or not :-)

And it is making myristic fatty acid comments. Of course if the myristic acid was wearing glycerin, then it would look fat.

I thought maybe the phosphoric acid was wearing the sugar instead of the other way around. It is just easier to believe two acids would be friends.

I want to use "myristic fatty acid" in casual conversation.

Where might one get such a Tshirt?

:-D Kevin's given me permission to turn this into a t-shirt. I just need to find the time. So many interesting things to do, not enough time. :-(

Cafepress?

I'd order a shirt or five.

As a non-chemist, I must assume that it's a fat and a chemical that makes the fat a sugar.

Not a chemist, but the humor is still accessible. :) Well done!

I _WANT_ one!!!

I just finish taking an intro to organic and biochemistry!

May I send the pic to the professor?
