It's a predictable part of a kitten's charm that it can go from "ball of energy" to "pile of fur" in under a second.

I really like your second picture there (on side, ears perked), with enough back-lighting to outline the head, but also some sparkle in the eyes.

Kittens do tend to binary extremes of really ON or really OFF, it seems, and I do see a lot of kittens, volunteer kitten feeder that I am (at the THS). I am quite happy with my 7 and 8 year-old cats who settle down at night when I do (most of the time).
